Concept and design by the fine folks at Hello Charlie. https://hawkinspostproduction.com/Netflix-Ancient-Apocalypse-The-Americas Tue, 27 May 2025 16:01:29 +0000 Tim Hawkins Animation https://hawkinspostproduction.com/Netflix-Ancient-Apocalypse-The-Americas Ancient Apocalypse: Series 2 Netflix Controversial pseudo-archeologist Graham Hancock explores the death of ancient civilisations in this Netflix series, which also stars Keanu Reeves.Animated content for the second series of the show was produced and directed by Hello Charlie. I worked across a number of the animated sequences in the series that explore apocalypse myths, adding camera movement, transitions, lighting and particle effects to bring the illustrated frames to life. This is a highlights reel showing some of my work on the series.The title plate at the end is not by me, but appears with Hello Charlie’s permission. I did the animation and compositing across the myths sequences featured in this reel and also some additional tracking and comp work that I’ve not included.&nbsp; This is a complete myth sequence, with the sync audio. It tells the story of Kukulkan. Many of the myths were cut-up during the editing process, but this one made it to the screen intact. https://hawkinspostproduction.com/BBC-Inside-Our-Minds-Series-2 Tue, 27 May 2025 14:44:37 +0000 Tim Hawkins Animation https://hawkinspostproduction.com/BBC-Inside-Our-Minds-Series-2 Inside Our Minds: Series 2 BBC For the second series of the BBC documentary ‘Inside Our Minds’ Chris Packahm expands his exploration of neurodivergence to ADHD and Dyslexia. I was the sole VFX artist/animator across three of the four short films that Hello Charlie created for the series. ADHD - Jo When she was growing up Jo’s father would describe her as a ‘butterfly’. Her film explores this motif alongside her love of clubbing and dance music. I was tasked with creating flocks of butterflies and butterfly wings made of light, as well as kalidoscopic composites of her family photos, which where projected on to Jo.&nbsp; In addition to these elements I added lasers and smoke elements to augment what had been filmed on location. Dyslexia - Suiki Suiki describes the feeling of living with dyslexia as like having thoughts that slip away like fish in a pond. In her film she goes, like Alice, through the looking glass into a world in which those thoughts become visible. I created the transition though the mirror, tracking and keying the footage as well as adding rippling energy fields and particle effects. Within the magical world I worked with 3D renders of the ‘fish’, tracking and compositing them into almost every shot - a challenge as the turnaround time for VFX was 5 days! ADHD - Henry In his film, drama student Henry battles ‘The Tombola Man’ - a personification of his ADHD, who constantly distracts him from everyday tasks by throwing new thoughts at him.To reflect the dark, clownish figure of The Tombola Man we chose to depict the thoughts his throws at Henry using a comicbook-esque block type that bounces around the screen. I created a collection of sketchy frame-by-frame animated action lines, pops and flashes that could be used across the film. Presented by Chris Packham, the series gives a voice to autistic people, asking them to explain how being autistic effects their lives. This is then distilled down into short films, written by the documentary’s subjects, that use animation, motion graphics and VFX to bring their words to life. I worked across most of the animated sequences in the show, predominantly as a compositor, but also doing some editing, grading and motion graphics. I love using a mix of physical and digital media like this as it can really create a sense of physicality that can sometimes be absent in purely digital work. https://hawkinspostproduction.com/CBeebies-The-Nick-Cope-Popcast Thu, 24 Apr 2025 16:04:23 +0000 Tim Hawkins Animation https://hawkinspostproduction.com/CBeebies-The-Nick-Cope-Popcast The Nick Cope Popcast CBeebies I worked with Complete Control as an animator on all three series of this lovely show for BBC CBeebies. Nick Cope’s Popcast takes place in a magical world of music, animals, rainbows and dragons, which are brought to life through a combination of live-action and 2D animation. Above is a compilation of some of the shots I enjoyed working on in the third and final series. I was brought on to the first series as a compositor initially, adding bits of live action to the animated songs and animation to the live action sequences. By the end of that series I took on more and more animation duties and on later series’ my role was to take the rough animations and get them to a final, broadcast-ready standard while implementing any changes from the various parties involved. My experience as both an editor and an animator was really helpful here as it meant I was able to ensure that the flow of the camera and rhythm of the edit was working, as well as polishing or adding in additional character and background animation.
